3.5 ⭐️ but rounding up for Goodreads.

Hades/ Prince of Hell is one of my favorite book settings, so I was really looking forward to this one. I'd recommend this for anyone looking for a low spice (I think maybe one scene happens) demon/demon slayer book.

I was a little sad that they never went to the underworld and that everything stayed up in the mortal world. I was hoping for more spice and to feel more chemistry between the main characters. But I'd still recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, easy read!

My very first book I’ve ever read by Jessi Elliot, and I’m a fan! This was such a fun, easy to read paranormal romance!

☕️ TROPES & THEMES ☕️
✔️ enemies to lovers 🤌🏽
✔️ demons vs demon hunters
✔️ adorable and swoon-worthy banter
✔️ spicy pnr
✔️ angst
✔️ anxiety rep
✔️ first in a series

Not only was this book angsty, full of tension between our two main characters- but it was also cute?? Like, I was swooning over the texts between Xander and Camille. 🥹

Jessi did an outstanding job making the reader feel like they were there with the characters for each scene. The vibes of Seattle were there and with a paranormal touch too? *chef kiss*

Camille had my heart from the get go. I always think about how I would be in all the stories I’ve read, and frankly Camille’s anxiety and close call panic attacks are absolutely what would happen to my arse if I ever came face to face with a demon who wanted to ☠️ me, unfortunately. This made her so enduring and likable though, how real she seemed! And then as the story went on, the reader watched her sort of evolve and get stronger as the stakes got higher.

Xander, bless. He is a secret cinnamon roll. I loved his character and his eccentric bestie-not-bestie Blake.

I definitely didn’t see that ending coming, and omg. NOW WHAT?! Is it too soon to ask for book 2?! 🤣

My rating: 3.5⭐️
Goodreads round off to 4⭐️

I was very excited to read this book because of the tropes and come on, its demons and demon hunter, what more could you ask for.

Things that I like/enjoyed in this book:

• Xander - prince of hell, half demon. Okay, so I really like how much of a smooth talker Xander is.

• Camille - daughter of demon hunters, smitten kitten. She’s got butterflies all over her stomach when it comes to Xander (can’t say I blame her with how smooth he is).

• Harper - the badass best friend of Camille

• Blake - Xander’s demon bodyguard

• Demon/demon hunter plot which kind of reminded me a little bit of Supernatural.

Bonus Points: Anxiety representation and character interviews towards the end of the book.

-

What fell short for me in this book:

Camille. She’s in this list because of her poor decision making skills. I can’t say much without spoiling it, but, come on.

• The relationship seemed a little rush. I guess it would fall under the instalike trope. I don’t necessarily have a problem with insta- tropes, however, there was no build up between Camille and Xander (as much as I like their chemistry together).

-

Overall, I enjoyed The Devil’s Waltz. It could have definitely been better. I enjoyed each character. I’m hoping the next book we get more than what was given in this one like some character growth Also that ending, what in the actual hell.

You might like this book if you like demon/demon hunter, forbidden love, lovers-enemies-(maybe)lovers, instalike, paranormal, witty banter (which I only saw between Blake and Camille).

-

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review. This in no way impacted my opinions.

I was really excited at the beginning because it started off strong but about 57% in everything kind of fell off.

I felt their relationship was a bit rushed and the way she acted to his betrayal was disappointing. There was no buildup.

I would have really liked to get more world building on how the Organization first came to be, how her parents got to be in charge, stuff like that.

Also, her friends get kidnapped and she knows every demon out there is after her head and she's just going to school? For being a Department/Division of the Government their isn't much security or protection for her as I thought.

I was really excited about this, but it just ended not being my cup of tea.

**I received this as an ARC, but I will always be honest in my reviews**

THE WASTED POTENTIAL!!!! I will never get over it.

Camille is the daughter of the leaders of a secret demon hunting sector of the government. Xander is the prince of hell. They’re enemies. They shouldn’t. But when Xander is sent to trick Camille into helping his mom - the queen of hell - they do.

Honestly the tension and build up was so fun. But once she found out who he was, this book deflated so fast for me. There was nothing going on but planning and the fallout from the betrayal that just wasn’t high enough stakes for me.

actual rating 2.5.

If you’re looking for forbidden romance mixed with demons and the supernatural, then this book is for you!

Beware the cliff hanger! It’ll make you wanting more, more, more!

Camille and Xander have an interesting dynamic and I cannot wait to see how it plays out in the second book.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing something blossom between Harper and Blake because their banter is borderline flirting, but I don’t think that’s something you’ll see, at least for awhile if the author chooses to go that route. 👀

Keeping my eye out for the next one.

✨I was provided an ARC but the review is completely my own opinion✨

Thank you to R&R Tours and Jessi Elliot for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

I enjoyed this! It was a fast read that never dragged and kept me reading to see what was happening next!
The strongest bit for me was Xander. He was cute and smooth and hot and a mystery, definitely fun to read and I loved the fact that we got both POVs in this story.
I really enjoyed Cami too. She was strong even when she was scared and I love that kind of vulnerability in a character.

I had a few small issues with the overall pacing of the plot. I felt that they got together too quickly and then, of course, the big reveal came rather fast, putting the romance on hold, which made me sad because I really loved the dynamic they had together in those beginning stages.

The ending came up really fast too! I felt it came too fast (lol pun??) and I wish we had a bit more story before the end. But the cliffhanger is a cliffhanger and I'm gonna need book 2.

I beta read The Devil's Waltz a billion years ago. Okay, maybe it wasn't that long ago. But I immediately fell in love with the story. There have been some changes made between then and the published edition. I loved trying to figure out who Xander was in the draft I read. But I also really enjoyed getting a more fleshed out version of Xander with his POV in the published book. I'm not sure which version I enjoyed the most. I did choose to listen to the audiobook this time around. The narrators didn't exactly match my version of Camille and Xander but they were still enjoyable. And even though I already knew the cliffhanger, I was still shocked. Again. I can't wait for book 2.

When this one came into the store, I was drawn to the beautiful cover. And then got intrigued by the description, and when I saw that one of my favorite authors (Maria Snyder) read it and loved it how could I resist? So glad I picked it up and gave it a whirl. Loved the characters, and their layered development. I thought the storyline moved along well, and I enjoyed the world building. I hope in the future, as this series progresses that we get more from Xander's perspective. I think it is a more unique point of view and would have made for a more dynamic storyline. Don't get me wrong, I like Camille, but you don't get a lot of novels from the male villain's perspective and I really enjoyed Xander's voice. My only real negative about this one would be the editing of the book, which is not the author's fault. There are little grammatical errors here and there (mostly sentences missing 'the' or 'to') throughout the book. The most obvious, I am listing here in hopes that either the author or the publisher may see them to correct them in future editions - page 48, Blake's first entrance, I believe what Xander is saying is "since when do you knock," but the sentence ends with only the word Since. Page 135 into page 136 ends and starts on the same sentence, it is printed twice. Page 192 there is a paragraph duplicated toward the bottom of the page. And in the bonus content, Camille's interview, her name is misspelled in the title of the interview. Don't let those errors stop you from reading this, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and honestly can't wait for the next one.

The Devil's Waltz is a spicy paranormal romance that will keep you glued to the book from the first page to the last. The story is about Camille Morgan, a college student who wants nothing to do with her family's legacy of demon hunting. Xander Kane is a charming and mysterious demon who has his own agenda. When their paths cross, sparks fly. Danger is surrounded in every corner.

Jessi Elliott has created a captivating world of demons, hunters, and magic, where nothing is as simple as it seems and betrayal is always a possibility. The characters are well-developed and have realistic flaws and emotions. Cami is a strong and independent character who struggles with her past and her feelings for Xander. Xander is a charming and charismatic hero who hides a dark and painful secret. Their chemistry is quite hot and their romance is steamy as well as sweet.

The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns that will keep you hooked until the end. The writing is engaging and flawless, with nice dialogues and vivid scenes. The book is a perfect mixture of action, suspense, humor, and romance, that will appeal to fans of paranormal and fantasy genres. If you are looking for a thrilling and entertaining read, you should definitely check out The Devil's Waltz by Jessi Elliott. You will definitely enjoy reading it as much as I did.

✨ My thoughts ✨
So... I am obsessed with this one. I have been a big fan of Jessi's work. This one didn't disappoint me. Camille (Cami) is one favorite FMC. Her struggles though the book felt real. I loved seeing work though things. Xander was such a smooth MMC. He's just so dang dreamy. The banter in this entire book was so good. The spice in this book was just chefs kiss. I enjoyed all of the side characters too. I enjoyed the fast pace of everything. I enjoyed how the world was set up. It was easy to follow. The ending had me in complete shock. I need book two right now! If you are a lover of paranormal romance with a demon hunter and demon this one is for you. I can't recommend this one and all of Jessi's work.

The Devil's Waltz is book one in Love in Hell series. It is recommended for 18+. As always please check TW before reading.

✨ I want to thank Jessi for an E-ARC copy of this book. These are my own true thoughts and feelings.

I loved Cami. Since the death of her sister she struggles to live her life outside of the family business. Her parents are pushing her to do hunter training, but Cami wants to go to college and live the life that she wants.

Xander, Prince of Hell, is being pushed by his mom, Queen of Hell, to use Cami for her own benefits. Will Xander be able to do this once he develops feelings for Cami?

I loved the side characters in this story too. Blake, Noah, and Cami's best friend Harper.

This book had angst, banter, and oh no moments that would make you question things. Jessi did a wonderful job writing this book and you feel like you are there with them and experiencing things with the Xander and Cami as they try to understand things.

Beware of the ending, because I went into this book pretty much blind and wasn't prepared for the cliffhanger. Now I need book two like NOW.

Would definitely recommend this book and Jessi Elliott to other fellow readers.

This was a really fun, easy to read paranormal romance. I haven't read anything by Jessie Elliot before, but this book was a great dip in the pond for me. This story was definitely an enemies-lovers to enemies-lovers, I know it sounds weird. But when you've read it, you will get it 🤣.

The male main character is a secret cinnamon roll, smooth talking prince of hell who is easy to fall for. The female main character could do with some lessons in good decision-making skills, but she grows as the book develops, and it's really great to see her story unravel further.

The concept for this story was great, and whilst the spice wasn't quite up there for my own personal tastes, the chemistry between the two main characters was electric. overall, I found this an enjoyable light read and would definitely recommend it to those who like an easy paranormal romance read.

….so book two is coming out when? I need it now! This is a series I know I’m going to devour!

Cami wants nothing to do with the demon hunting organization her parents run especially since her sister was killed. I admired her determination to forge her own path and stand up for what she wants out of life.

Enter Xander. His good looks, charm, and that demon he took out catches Cami’s attention. Except Xander isn’t totally who he makes himself out to be.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story - there’s a number of scenes where you will be tightly gripping the book, maybe even holding your breath, as you read what happens next. There’s also the navigation of are they or aren’t they evil/to be trusted. And now… I’m excited for more!

If you’re looking for a book with some moral greyness, spice, snark, and determination, The Devil’s Waltz is what you should pick up next!

“How do I say that was everything to the person I’m going to destroy?”

4.5✨

I’m going to need a moment to recoup after reading this one. When I started this one, it was a delicious, slow build between Camille (daughter of two notorious demon hunters) and Xander (the prince of hell). Once things picked up, I couldn’t put the book down, and once I reached the end - I didn’t want to put the book down and accept that cliffhanger. That last chapter was INTENSE - and captivating - and left me speechless😶

I enjoyed everything about this book, from the characters to the plot to the fantastic writing. I’ve always admired Jessi’s writing talent, and this book shows that talent with how well I became immersed into the characters and felt exactly what they were feeling - THE BEST WHEN READING!🫶

This book is a 3.5 for me.

Camille (FMC) comes from a family of demon hunters and her parents lead the organization responsible for training and employing hunters. After a demon murders her sister, Camille swears off hunting and drops out of the academy. We start off with her attending college in Seattle and working part time at a coffee shop.

Pretty immediately we meet Xander (MMC), when he saves Camille from a demon attack outside of work one night. They start to see more of each other and our plot launches from there.

The writing style of this book feels like a debut novel. The author does a lot of “telling” instead of showing the reader what is happening. It’s not always the case, but I typically find this to be a theme in newer authors. I wish the book had showed us more, taking us through the story, instead of just telling us what was happening.

I prefer more of a slow burn between characters, and this definitely felt like an instant-like situation instead. Camille and Xander do have some good dynamics as the plot progresses, but I think it fell flat a little in terms of building up their relationship/dynamic. I would’ve like to see more of a slow build and more depth in their background. If that was present, the outcome of this book would’ve felt more realized.

SPOILER:

We do find out that Xander is the prince of hell, but is half demon and half human. Some of his development in this book feels rushed and out of place when it comes to his human side. There’s a term he repeatedly calls Camille in the book and we don’t originally know where it comes from. In my mind, it made more sense for it to be part of his demon language or an ancient text, but it’s really just an Irish phrase from his human side even though he never knew his dad (just that he was Irish)???

Camille particularly bugs me in her sheer helplessness and inability to contribute. I think her character is very hollow overall, and would really benefit from some redeemable qualities. Aside from her relationship with Xander and general compassion, she often gets in the way.

I didn’t like the way the book ended, even though it sets us up for the next book. The sudden shift that happened felt very out of character for Camille and I would’ve expected her to react differently given the situation she was in.

Overall, I still enjoyed the book and it was a quick read. I think with more time and depth, it would’ve been a solid 4 star for me. I’ll continue to read the series as books come out, but would love to see deeper world building/intentionality in them. There is potential for this to be something very well done. If these themes and plot were done in a similar writing style to Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House, it would be a slam dunk.

Bonus points because she includes a playlist at the end that is just 🤌🏻🤌🏻

3.5.

I received a AR link of this book for a fair and honest review.  It's a solid quick and easy read with a few minor issues. At times it can be a little wordy and a little slow. Some of the interactions between charachters could have been condensed . Also, I didn't feel too invested or connected to the main characters.  Overall I'd say it was a decent book.

***Spoilers Below****

The FMC  Camille was formerly in training to become a demon hunter. Her sister is killed in a demon attack and in her last moments ask Camille to get out of the life and live for herself.  Camille suffers from severe panic attacks from her sisters death and they are noted multiple times throughout the book. Leaving the order is hard to do since her parents are high up in the command chain. Her mother spends a lot of her time trying to convince her to come back.

Xander Cane is our MMC, he is introduced like a night in shining armor coming in just in time to save our fmc from a demon attack. Don't let his easy going demeanor and charm fool you, because it turns out he is a half human,/half demon son of the Queen of Hell.  Xanders two heritages keep him in turmoil. His human side shines through fighting for his ever growing feelings for Camille and overall distaste for the way his mother rules. While his Demon side is obligated to follow the Queen of Hells orders, as well as feed on the fear of humans. His mother's plan is to use Camille to bring down the Demon hunters and take over the humans. Xander is tasked with making this happen.

Like all secrets Xanders comes to light and Camille is left with heartbreak and betrayl. Despite their differences and now strained relationship. They continue to want/fall for each other. After some more tragedy, they come up with a plan to stop the queen from taking over the world.

The book ends with their plan going completely awry. We are left with the futruew of our MC's up in the air and open to interpretation. Of course what fantasy book is complete without a cliffhanger? The book makes way for a second book to continue our MCs story and also probably to expand on some of the side charchters as well.

The Devil's Waltz starts out strong with an interesting premise. Camille, the main character, is at odds with her parents because they want her to join a secret government agency that hunts demons, and she just wants to go to college and work at the quiet coffee shop downtown. But Camille is thrown right into the action when she meets Xander, who has a few secrets of his own. The plot slows down about halfway through, but the cliffhanger it ends on has left me wondering what will happen next!

I enjoyed a lot of this book, especially the strong writing and the fast-paced scenes. Harper, Camille's best friend, was a highlight because of her personality, and I hope that she gets more page time in the next few books. Moreover, Xander's struggle with his parentage (as a half-demon prince) was interesting and well-done, but I wish he'd had more of a chance to grapple with this issue throughout the book. I was also intrigued by the idea of a secret government agency dedicated to hunting demons. I loved that there was a playlist in the back of the book - the songs fit the mood of the story perfectly!

However, several things about this story fell flat for me. First, the insta-love between Xander and Camille - it didn't seem to fit the flow of the story, and I wish I had seen a few more interactions between them before they realized their feelings for each other to build up that aspect of the plot. By the time the spice happened, I wasn't convinced that they had a reason to be as into each other as they claimed to be. Second, the book is kind of gratuitously mean to Camille's mom for being very focused on her job, which I found off-putting, since Camille's dad never got the same kind of flack even though he was also very focused on his job. Third, I wish there had been more worldbuilding about how the secret government agency stays secret/how it interacts with the rest of the country.

All in all, it was a fun read, and I would like to read the next one!

I received an ARC of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Between the blurb and the cover, I thought this book would be "darker". I really WANTED it to be darker.

That being said, the storyline of this book was pretty good and kept me entertained.

Camille comes from a demon hunting royal family and her sister was killed by a demon while hunting them. She had told Cami to get out of the business, and that's what Cami did. She didn't want to be consumed by all that is demon hunting and not have a life. Her parents, though, don't understand and are still trying to get her back into the family business. She still has people show up in the book, though, who are in the hunter's academy or part of the business - namely her roomie and bff, Harper, and Noah, her childhood "friend".

One evening after work, Cami is attacked by a demon and is saved by another hunter, Xander. They start a slow and tenuous relationship, and the reader knows before Camille knows that Xander isn't what he seems. In fact, not only does he reveal that he is a demon, but his is the literal Prince of Hell. Camille finds this out accidentally, but still wants to have a relationship. He is torn because his human side (his father was human) really wants to have a relationship with Cami, but his demon side has no choice but to obey the Queen - his mother.

Xander comes clean with Camille and they decide together that they are worth a chance. However, not all forces agree with this and the end has a pretty significant twist and cliff hanger. If I was a fan of a book series following the same couple, I would definitely read the next book.

Good story and dual POV. Low to med spice as most of the book is the plot.

The interviews at the end are interesting. Just don't read them first...it will give stuff away.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write this review.

An incredible story that takes the reader on a journey of finding one’s path in life by making the hard decisions and a world of creatures that grips you from the very beginning. Camille comes from a family of hunters and after the tragedy with her sister she is more than determined to carve her own path to leave that world behind. Camille’s trauma still haunts her from day to day and watching her anxiety strike her was so relatable that I could feel every second of her panic. The way her parents wanted her to continue her training to fight evil kept her at arm’s length because all she wanted was normal and all they wanted was to follow the dreams they had for her and it played a huge part in her anxiety. When Xander comes in to her life he’s mysterious, yet intriguing and she can’t help the attractions she feels towards him but he is hiding secrets that could destroy everything. As the story unfolds we slowly see the secrets unfold while Camille and Xander’s love story becomes more complicated, yet they can’t stay easy from each other. At the end of the day Camille has to make more and more difficult decisions while breaking her own heart and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. This story had all the emotions from heartache to fear, but it’s so beautifully done that I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. My heart hurts for the characters but I know the journey is going to be epic, I’m still a little nervous with the Noah thing thrown in the mix but I have faith. It does end on a cliffhanger which has me craving the next book but I am excited!!!

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book but I absolutely loved it and it left me wanting more so I am hoping that it will not be too long a wait until we get to see the next stage of the journey these wonderful characters are on.

Camille Morgan (Cami) grew up in a demon hunter family, in fact her parents are quite high up in the organisation it was assumed that Cami and her sister would automatically follow in their footsteps but when Cami's sister is killed in a demon attack Cami turns her back on that world and despite repeated pressure placed on her by her family she remains resolute in her decision. One night she is closing up at work when she is attacked by a demon and saved by a hunter, Xander, who she doesn't know. She and Xander soon grow closer and I really enjoyed how their relationship developed, it seemed quite natural and organic. Although Xander isn't who he says he is and who he is will flip Cami's world upside down and have her heart breaking.

Can a Prince of hell (even if only half demon) and a demon hunter's daughter work together to take down the Queen of hell and stay friends, if not more than friends? The story was really original and well-written and the characters are multi-faceted and really likeable, yep, even Xander and his best friend/demon.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

My Review:

“Being a hunter takes over your entire life, and I want more. Something I choose for myself instead of the life I was born into.”

This is a dual POV, supernatural, paranormal fantasy. Camille is the daughter of demon hunters, but wants nothing to do with that lifestyle and tries to live a “normal” life of a college student. She meets a man named Xander, and they quickly fall for each other, however Xander is hiding secrets from Camille that will threaten their relationship and could change the fate of the human world.

I really enjoyed both of the main characters in this book, and liked the portrayal of Camille. While she struggles with anxiety, she shows a lot of strength in the face of some pretty tough challenges. Xander is seductive, charming, and protective of Camille, and liked his complexities. Xander has a tragic backstory that influences his actions, and there is a pretty big twist at the end that was very unexpected. There’s a solid cast of very likeable side characters and we get some great banter as a result. The book does end on a cliffhanger.

If you like the vibe of the television shows Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Lucifer, and enjoy reading book tropes like forbidden love, lovers to dislike/enemies, demons, angst, and snarky banter this is a great read for you!

3.75 🌟 Review

"Being with Xander now, I feel as if I’ve known him forever. There’s an innate part of me that trusts him—maybe it has to do with the whole life-saving thing last week—and he waltzed right past my defenses, I think, without me even realizing it."

Thank you Jessi and R&R for my review arc! This is my first read by Jessi and that cover is gorgeous! The Devil's Waltz is Book 1 in the Love in Hell series out Feb 27th!

Things I loved:
❤️ Cami's mental health rep
🖤 Xander is swoonworthy and a cinnamon roll
❤️ Dual PoV so you can understand and relate to both characters plus all the banter
🖤 the whole demon/demon hunter forbidden romance and the angst
❤️ gave me Buffy/Lucifer vibes with a little Supernatural
🖤 Harper and Blake are fantastic side characters
❤️ Seattle PNR setting

Things I think could've been better:
🖤I wish they'd made it to the Underworld
❤️ the relationship was rushed (I don't mind insta-love but this was still too fast)
🖤 the pacing was a little off
❤️ needed more world building
🖤 could've used some more background on the organization

And that cliffhanger ending is brutal!! But it's enough that I'll definitely pick up book 2 and hope it has everything missing from this one!
